The report was jointly commissioned by the Cape Independence Advocacy Group (CIAG) and Lex Libertas and independently produced by Econometrix, an established and highly respected economic research firm. It investigates the relationship between government revenues raised in the Western Cape, government spending in the Western Cape, and the level of fiscal extraction over a ten-year period between 2015 and 2024.

The findings are remarkable, revealing the full extent of South Africa’s dependency on the province, and leading the report’s independent conclusions to question whether the status quo is fiscally, economically, and socio-politically sustainable.

CIAG co-founder Phil Craig and Lex Libertas executive director Dr Ernst Roets will be presenting the report, which will be used to motivate for a change in the system of provincial transfers - away from a distribution imposed onto the Western Cape by the national government, towards a negotiated settlement.

Space is limited. If you would like to attend please contact Leila van Diggele on admin@capeindependence.org to reserve a seat. Embargoed copies of the report are available in advance upon request.
